Have you ever wondered how the rain that we see outside ends up in our taps, or how its treated and then we’re able to drink?
Here’s the process, which includes 20,00 miles of pipes, Thames Water and half a million tests.
The water is then pumped to the water treatment works where it goes through various treatment processes before it’s sent out to us.
Water is either stored in reservoirs if a) it hasn’t rained for a while in case we need it for when there’s a drought or b) leaving the water in storage starts a natural clean-up process so we don’t have to take out the heavier particles.
The water is passed through a tank full of coarse sand. The sand traps particles as the water passes through. The water is then slowly filtered through large beds of much finer sand. This removes any remaining particles before the water goes for its final treatment.
